One of the things that the 6th grade orchestra works for each year is the "Monster Concert". This concert is put on by all of the 6th grade orchestra students in the school district. There are 4 different orchestra teachers - so they all work with their students on the same music throughout the year, then all the students come together to perform their pieces as one great whole. The students aren't assigned "chairs" like they are in the upper grades - so it was basically pick a spot and sit! For the most part, everyone played the same pieces - but the "advanced" students from each school were given alternate parts to the pieces that were being played. This allowed some variety in the songs and you could hear that some were playing one part while others were playing the other part. Very cool! K was one of the students with a few of the advanced pieces and she was so worried about it - you see, it sounded funny without the harmony being played too - but her teacher kept telling her that she had it right. It wasn't until everyone came together for one giant rehearsal that she could finally hear how her piece fit.
There wasn't near enough space at Viewmont High School to hold this concert. We later found out that this was the first year that they've had the concert here. They changed venues because there wasn't enough room at the other school they were using. Looks like they'll have to move again! There were parents and grandparents standing, sitting on the floor, anywhere that they could find a space - it was crazy!
The kids did a great job - the concert lasted about an hour. K's favorite songs were the Can Can, and Ode to Joy (even if they did play them WAY UNDER TEMPO!).
Way to go K - we had fun and we look forward to many more orchestra concerts!!
